The Brunel Run
The Brunel Run is an annual
event by the Bristol Area MG Owners' Club at the beginning of
September. We believe it may now be the only weekend area MG event.
Like many good ideas, the Brunel Run was 'born'
in a pub, the initial brainchild of Danny Fenton, Simon Hawkes
and George Barnard. The ethos of the weekend has always been to
enjoy a great run out in an MG (preferably) and, hopefully, make
a bit of money toward a charity along the way.
In 1994 we raised the princely sum of £150.
It is a testament to Brunel attendees (and sadly inflation) that
we are able to present a sum more in the region of £2000
to our charity these days.
Since 2007 we have been privileged to use the
premises of the Bristol Children's Help Society at Barton Camp
near Winscombe. The facilities there are fantastic, with camping
facilities plus some indoor accommodation, a heated swimming pool
and indoor games hall. All the funds raised go to help with worthwhile
Bristol based charity that provides holidays for disadvantaged
children from Bristol and surrounding area. Bristol Children’s
Help Society is non-denominational and non-political. It exists
to give needy children time away from the stresses of home life.
The weekend package currently includes two nights camping,
two cooked ‘full English’ breakfasts (courtesy of
Theo and his team who give their time freely to aid our charity),
the run itself plus rally plaque, a meal
on Saturday evening and Sunday self judging. All you need to bring
(apart from your tent of course) is something to eat on Friday
evening and some liquid refreshment. Recently our Friday Night
Fish and Chip run has proved very popular, and we will probably be arranging
this again. Please note on the booking form if you will be interested
in this service, so that we may forewarn the excellent local chippy.
(There are also other take away outlets nearby if you prefer.)
For those unable to make the whole weekend,
we are always pleased to accept entries for the Saturday only.
The entry fee includes The Brunel Run, a rally plaque, and light
refreshments upon return to Barton Camp. "Run Only"
guests can also book a breakfast and/or whatever delights we are
providing for Saturday evening.
If we have run out of indoor accommodation and you don't feel like camping, here is some information on local accommodation which may be of interest.
